Photoredox catalysis is a technique that utilizes the energy of light to catalyze chemical reactions via single-electron transfer events. This area is named as a combination of "photo-" referring to particles of light, or photons; and redox, a short term of oxidation-reduction, a process of electron exchange. When a light-sensitive compound is excited by light, it mediates the transfer of electrons between chemical compounds to create new chemical bounds. Such reactions help discover new drugs, produce new or less-expensive fine chemicals for flavorings, pesticides, polymer materials, and other industrial chemicals.
